Das Catalinbread Topanga emuliert das legendäre Fender 6G15 Federhallgerät, welches quasi die Mutter des Surfsounds und der Soundtracks aller Spaghetti-Western ist. Teil der Magie dieses Hallgerätes war der Umstand, dass es in der Regel vorgeschaltet wurde was schnell dazu führte, dass das Hallsignal verzerrte und noch intensiver klang. Dieser Effekt ist heutzutage nicht so leicht zu reproduzieren, aber Catlinbread hat es mit einem zusätzlichen Preamp tatsächlich geschafft!

The outboard Fender 6G15 spring reverb unit is the sound of Surf guitar, Spaghetti Western and many other great guitar sounds from the sixties. Part of its magic, and how it differs from the internal spring reverb found in most Fender-style amps, is that it is run *in front* of the amp, causing the reverb signal to distort and sound more intense. Because there were additional knobs on the outboard units, you also have more control over the reverb qualities. The Dwell knob controlled how hard the springs were getting hit by the guitar signal. The Tone knob allowed the treble to be dialed back to just the right degree of brightness. It was also essentially a tube preamp, so it would color the sound going into the amp. All this added up to a very distinctive reverb sound with a lot of attitude and complex non-linearities that are hard to replicate. But we here at Catalinbread did just that! Besides giving you the classic three knob control compliment of the original, we’ve also added a great discrete preamp that you can control via the Volume knob for a healthy amount of great clean boost when you want it

 Brian May’s sonic signature not only comes from his home built “Red Special” guitar, but also from a treble-booster pummeling banks of AC30s. He never turns the treble booster off, accessing a wide range of tones simply by manipulating his volume knobs and pickup settings. From his guitar, to the treble booster, to the amps, his entire rig is essentially a singular musical instrument. One that inspires the sort of playing May is known for. We designed the Galileo with this playing approach in mind, that with it you can roll your guitar volume back for jangly AC30 cleans, and crank it up for searing leads and aggressive yet focused rhythm tones.

Es war der Oktober im Jahr 1971, als die Mannen von Pink Floyd ihr berühmtes Werk „Live at the Pompeii“ im Amphitheater der gleichnamigen italienischen Stadt aufnahmen. Stets mit dabei war eines der wohl angesagtesten Effektgeräte der damaligen Zeit – das Binson Echorec. Wohl kaum ein anderes Gerät prägte so maßgeblich den Sound von Pink Floyd der frühen Jahre wie dieses Echogerät, dessen Prinzip auf einer rotierenden Magnetscheibe basierte, die mit vier Tonköpfen das Signal aufnahm bzw. abspielte. Dabei machte nicht nur Leadgitarrist Dave Gilmour vom Echorec gebrauch, auch Bassist Roger Waters und Tastenmann Richard Wright nutzen diese Maschine ausgiebig.

The Binson Echorec was so cool we had no choice but to bring it back. And we wanted to bring it back right. We wanted to take all the goodness of that huge Binson Echorec and squeeze it down into a standard sized stompbox without losing anything. In fact, in addition to not losing any of the qualities that made it such a compelling musical device, we wanted to EXTEND its capabilities because the original Binson hinted at possibilities that it couldn’t realize. We’re talking about variable delay time! We thought, “What if we had the same four playback head concept but could stretch the delay time out beyond the 300mS of the original Binson?” Then the rhythmic patterns suggested by the various combinations of those four playback heads could really come to life!

The Topanga Burnside has all the springy, surfy mojo of the original Topanga but now features a Trem knob that controls the rate of a lush tremolo effect. We revisited the original Topanga and found that placing the tremolo between cascading reverb stages yielded the best results––the effect is not too choppy; not too washed out. Many surf rock and skate punk bands use spring reverb, tremolo or both simultaneously in order to get their sounds, and the Topanga Burnside is a nod to them.

Burnside is a reference to the famous Burnside Skatepark in Our hometown of Portland, OR. (shoutout to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater).

Spoiled by the various tube driven echo units we have around the shop, we wanted the Montavillian Echo to sound and feel just as BIG! So we went all out on the audio path on this thing… We took painstaking efforts to make the dry signal sound and feel better when on than with the pedal bypassed. The Montavillian Echo utilizes an obsolete delay processing IC, however, rather than slavishly following the path of that chip’s forebears, we cracked the books and ventured out on our own, using our ears to guide us, and what we achieved is a fantastic sounding delay, with a slew of sounds in a small, easy to use footprint. It has great headroom and stacking abilities, which are often shortcomings of echo pedals. We’ve run the Montavillian into all of our amps clean and cranked (Hiwatt, AC30, 5E3, Super Reverb, Blues Jr. etc.) we’ve also stacked it before our dirt pedals. We’ve even slammed it with numerous fuzzes and overdrives. The Montavillian handles it all with no effort. Should you need even more headroom, the Montavillian can be run at 18V.
