The Electronic Audio Experiments Citadel is a preamp-style overdrive inspired by the everlasting sounds of British amplifiers from the '60s and '70s. Rather than emulating a specific model, it encompasses our favorite parts of a whole generation of amplifiers including warm piano-like cleans, bright clear overdrive, and sizzling lead tones.

The Citadel began as a series of experiments on our Model feT pedal. Like any tube amp, there are ample opportunities for modifications. After all, the original Model T was itself a modified take on the Super Bass sound, delivering a distinct variety of the plexi flavor with fuzzy breakup and a huge low frequency punch. So, what if we flavored it our own way? Once Brad completed his "Marsha" prototype, it was on. In a way, you can almost think of the Citadel as a re-plexi-fied Model T sound, trading low end sludge for a sparkly midrange focus. In another way, you can think of it as what we’d do if the original Model T wasn’t too sacrosanct to modify.

Finally, like our Model feT, the Citadel emulates both the preamp and power amp sections of a tube amp to provide a full-bodied overdrive that feels powerful and responds wonderfully to boosts, drives, and fuzzes in front. It can be used either a conventional drive pedal or as the workhorse of an ampless signal chain.

Citadel

Eldritch Blast is a fuzz built around a high-gain octave/intermodulation generator. This unusual transistor circuit is capable of heavy, complex riffs or touch-sensitive textures with a ripping, splatty octave up. And its switchable active EQ invokes sinister high-gain tones worthy of the outer gods.

The development of the Eldritch Blast has origins in the early days of EAE. It is a greatly expanded take on the Magic Missile Fuzz, an old design of ours which is an homage to the modern classic fuzzes of Devi Ever, Tim Escobedo, and all of the circuit-bending weirdos on ilovefuzz.com. We teamed up with Alec from Mask Audio Electronics (MAE) to flesh out and fine-tune the design, and together came up with a result which significantly diverged from the original Magic Missile circuit.

For Eldritch Blast Version 3, available starting in April 2023, we revisited the function of the Chaos toggle. Rather than the gated mode of previous iterations, the Chaos toggle now engages a dynamic oscillation mode that creates sub octave glitches, atonal arpeggios, and other strange sounds that we haven’t discovered yet.

Eldritch Blast v3

Limelight is a dual channel overdrive developed in collaboration with LA-based punk band Touche Amore. The distinctive bright, clear tones of guitarists Nick Steinhardt and Clayton Stevens form the foundation of TA’s impassioned brand of post-hardcore, letting their riffs morph effortlessly between serene clean passages and cacophonous blast beats. This pedal was originally developed to commemorate the release of their 2020 LP, Lament, but since earned its place in a wide variety of guitar rigs spanning genres.

Limelight

The Electronic Audio Experiments Hypersleep is a solid-state analog reverberator. It evokes the immediate acoustic reflections of metal and tile, with a gritty timbre and a ringing, fluttering decay—forgoing epic atmospherics in favor of liminality. 

At the heart of the Hypersleep is the unusual and obsolete MN3011 bucket brigade device. Unlike other BBDs with one input and one output, the MN3011 uses an array of staggered delay outputs to produce a smeared-out echo. Feeding this echo back upon itself produces a reverberant texture. The reverb length can be modulated via the onboard LFO for atypical chorus and vibrato effects, or the haunting sound of a room changing size in real time. As always, careful signal conditioning ensures that Hypersleep is friendly to any instrument or line level signal source.

The Electronic Audio Experiments Dagger is a simplified and miniaturized iteration of our Longsword op amp drive. We streamlined the circuit into its core gain stages and dual band shelving EQ, for the ideal match of simplicity and flexibility.
