Carl Martin Compressor-Limiter has been specially developed to incorporate the same features and sonic clarity found in high quality professional studio compressors. To achieve this we incorporated a variable threshold, -variable compression ratio, -variable attack and release controls and of course, a gain level.
General Guidelines on the use of the Compressor/Limiter:
Threshold: Working anti clockwise, determines how much of the signal will be compressed. This is also dependent on how much signal is fed from the instrument.
Comp: Working clockwise, determines how much compression is applied to the signal allowed by the threshold setting.
Resp: Working clockwise, determines the attack/release times, going from slow to fast. In general, if you want to hear the compressor working with a crisp attack you should use slow times. If you require just a silent limiting you should use fast times.
Gain: Working clockwise, sets the overall gain.Busy: Indicates the amount of compression being applied, even in bypass mode. The brighter it gets, the more compression is being applied.You can find more detailed information under manuals.

Trem(olo) is basically defined as a cyclical variation of volume controlled by a low frequency oscillator, or for us guitar players…something that makes the guitar sound oscillate between quiet and loud either quickly or slowly….. Made famous in the 50’s and 60’s by bands like the Shadows and Dick Dale for that infamous ‘surf sound’, the Trem stuck around for many other guitar greats like Robin Trower, Hendrix and Page, right up to SRV and beyond. The Carl Martin Surf Trem has simplified the whole effect to 2 simple controls (just like the trem circuit on our vintage Fenders and Ampegs), Depth and Speed. The Depth knob controls how much of the effect you want in your guitar signal, and the Speed knob obviously controls the speed of the oscillation.

Carl begann vor Jahren mit dem Compressor Limiter, einem handgefertigten Kompressor aus Dänemark, der Studioqualität auf das Pedalboard brachte. Da das ursprüngliche Modell zu groß für moderne Pedalboards war, entwickelte Carl eine kompaktere Version mit nur zwei Reglern für Kompression und Lautstärke. Dieses neue Design erhielt begeistertes Feedback, da es dieselbe Klangqualität, denselben Headroom und dieselbe Ruhe wie Studio-Kompressoren bot, dabei jedoch einfach zu bedienen war.

Doch Carl wollte mehr und brachte den „Honey Comp“ heraus, der auf dem Comp Limiter basiert, aber um eine entscheidende Funktion erweitert wurde: einen "Dry"-Regler. Dieser ermöglicht paralleles Processing, eine Studiotechnik, bei der ein stark komprimiertes Signal mit einem unveränderten (Dry) Signal gemischt wird. Das Ergebnis ist ein dynamischerer Klang, der der Gitarre mehr Präsenz und Tiefe verleiht. Der Honey Comp hat somit drei Regler (Compression, Level und Dry), die eine schnelle und professionelle Klangabstimmung ermöglichen, ohne die Komplexität eines Studio-Setups

Carl started years back with the Compressor Limiter…that big black hand-made-in-Denmark compressor that brought studio comps to the pedal board.  The word got out that it was just too big for modern pedal boards, so Carl redesigned that pedal into a much smaller format, preset (or fixed) the Threshold and Response leaving just two knobs for Comp and Level. The feedback we got was overwhelming…players were telling us the Comp Limiter had the same sonic clarity, the same headroom and the same quietness that the big studio comps had but was so quick and easy to use.  Carl could have left it there, but that’s not Carl!

Welcome the Honey Comp, and it’s as sweet as …. well, you know …. honey.  This pedal is the same as the Comp Limiter in every way … same Gray anodized finish, same footprint and the same simplicity of use with one compression control and one level control. It is pretty much the perfect compressor, so what could Carl possible upgrade? Easy!  Carl added a Dry volume which allows you parallel processing with three knobs!  Parallel Processing is a studio technique which takes a heavily compressed signal (which through compression loses some dynamics if not all) and allows you to add a clean (Dry) signal on top replacing those dynamics giving your guitar three-dimensionality and allowing the guitar to cut through the mix.  For those of you used to studio work, this is a very well-known technique, but usually too complex for a pedal board! The three knobs allow you to balance the Compressed signal with the Dry signal quickly and efficiently for a very pro sound!

Honey Comp

Was ist also dieses verrückte Pedal? Nun, auf den ersten Blick sieht es aus wie viele andere Carl Martin-Pedale... es gibt einen High Gain-Kanal, der jede Menge Bässe und schöne knackige Höhen hat, einen sehr dynamischen Crunch-Kanal, der die Mitten mit sehr wenig Kompression betont, und natürlich den berühmten 12db Boost-Kanal, den wir alle so gut kennen.

So what is this crazy pedal? Well, at first glance it looks like many other Carl Martin pedals…there is a High Gain channel which has loads of bottom end and nice crisp highs, a very dynamic Crunch channel which emphasises the mids with very little compression, and of course that famous 12db Boost channel that we are all so familiar with.
