This unit is the Maestro Echoplex EP-3. While some guitarists made great use of its echo effect, others dragged one to every gig just for its magical preamp. This preamp circuit was wired always-on, and so even those using it as an echo effect received significant tonal enhancements from the preamp circuit as well. Everyone from Eddie Van Halen to East Bay Ray of the Dead Kennedys relied on the EP-3 preamp to take their sound to previously unreachable heights. And now you can also, with our Epoch Boost.

 We’ve always been smitten by AMPEG®. Early on the company was a Jazz purist company, completely overlooking (possibly looking down on) more popular genres like Country & Western and Rock that FENDER® and MARSHALL® openly embraced. From a design standpoint they took more queues from the hifi world than they did from guitarists as evidenced by their tube complements, gain stages without cathode capacitors, and implementation of the Baxandall tone controls. And they we’re no slouches to innovation either, “Flip-top” combos is a great example. Not to mention there is at least one model of amplifier that had a torsion bar to adjust the tightness of the speaker baffle!

The Big Muff is probably one of the most sought after, and heavily replicated pedals on the planet. Even though it is still made by the original manufacturer, it’s long and varied history has made it’s way into many other pedal manufacturer’s fold. When we set out to create the Manx Loaghtan fuzz, our goal wasn’t to brush off an obscure build to recreate. Rather than looking back over that pedals heritage, we wanted to try and push it forward. One of the more common traits among fuzzes of that ilk is the tone control. However, we felt that such a tone stack was rather limiting. Often you would follow the sweep looking for the one spot that sounded right. The one spot where it didn’t sound too boomy or constricted and thin. Where the pedal finally finds its harmony. We wanted it to not be a compromise between too bright and too bassy, but also be capable of doing either or both with a nice mid range scoop in order to sound HEAVY for chunky chords. So rather than using the traditional tone control we incorporated the Baxandall.

Manx Loaghtan

The Bicycle Delay was something like an “Albert Hoffman -the inventor of LSD, which we all love- moment” (to quote a good friend and guitarist Neal Casal). I sat down with no plan of where I was going but to allow myself the freedom to be open to wherever the journey took me and just document the experience. Really a strange path to travel when it involves something as cerebral as programming software. Or maybe it’s not. Maybe that’s a pure form of creativity, to use the boundaries something so matter of fact as programming as a medium for art? The result was a pedal as autobiographical as any I have been involved in. The Bicycle Delay is a physical manifestation of the experience of consciousness, letting go of the desire to control everything, and maintaining a positive attitude to leave room for a positive experience.
