Zu Beginn der 90er Jahre schlug ein neues Effektpedal aus Deutschland auf dem Markt ein wie eine Bombe. Die saarländische Firma Hughes & Kettner präsentierte im Frühjahr 1991 einen Röhren-Preamp in Fußtreterform, der sich aufgrund seiner mit drei unterschiedlichen Signalen belegten Ausgangsbuchsen nicht nur als Vorschaltgerät vor dem Gitarrenverstärker, sondern auch als reiner Preamp zusammen mit einer Endstufe und Boxen oder aber als Recording-Preamp in einem Mixer empfahl. Das gab es bis dato in dieser Form nicht oder nur sehr selten, daher wurde die schwarzblaue Metallbox nicht nur für Gitarristen schnell zu einem gefragten Werkzeug. Auch Keyboarder bzw. Organisten schätzten den Röhrensound des Hughes & Kettner Tubeman – und tun dies bis heute.
