Ein bisschen Backstage-Info... 2016 haben wir einen Custom-Amp gebaut, der zwischen den Sounds eines 5E3 Tweed Deluxe und eines 6G2 Brownface Princeton morphen sollte. Wir mochten den Sound und das Gefühl des Verstärkers so sehr, dass wir beschlossen, ihn in einem Pedalformat einzufangen.

Der Falcon wurde als akribische Emulation der Schaltungen dieser Verstärker entwickelt. Bis ins kleinste Detail haben wir das Verhalten, den Sound und das Gefühl des Vorverstärkers, des Phasenumkehrers und der Endstufe dieser beiden Designs kopiert. Durch den Einsatz der JFET-Technologie ist es uns gelungen, nicht nur die übersteuerten Sounds, sondern auch die Low-Gain/Clean-Sounds nachzubilden.

Der wichtigste Teil war die Emulation der Kompression und der Ansprache, die von der Endstufe bzw. dem Röhrengleichrichter ausgehen. Dieser Effekt verbessert das dynamische, musikalische Gefühl des Pedals und macht es sehr reaktionsfreudig auf Ihren Picking-Angriff. Je nach Einstellung des Verstärkermodus und der Leistung der Gitarre bzw. des Tonabnehmers kann dieser Effekt mehr oder weniger stark ausgeprägt sein.

A bit of backstage info… back in 2016 we built a custom amp that was designed to morph between the sounds of a 5E3 Tweed Deluxe and a 6G2 Brownface Princeton. We liked the sound and feel of the amp so much that we decided to capture it in a pedal format.

     Falcon was designed as a painstakingly close emulation of the circuits found in these amps. With every detail in mind we copied the behavior, sound and feel of the preamp, phase inverter and power amp of both these designs. Applying JFET technology we managed to recreate not only the overdriven sounds but the lower gain / clean sounds as well.

     The most important part was emulating the compression and sag coming out of the power amp and tube rectifier respectively. This effect enhances the pedal’s dynamic, musical feel and makes it very responsive to your picking attack. Depending on amp mode setting and your guitar / pickup’s output this effect can be more or less pronounced.

Falcon

The left side is voiced after the blackface amps that defined clean electric guitar sounds. All analog and following the circuit path to the exact detail we managed to include all the essential sonic ingredients. From the big bold lows, sparkly highs and slightly scooped mids, to the powerful sound of a solid state rectified 4x 6L6GC power amp or the sponginess of a tube rectified 2x 6L6GC power amp selectable through the headroom switch.

Match that to the green mid-hump overdrive we’ve all grown to love, upon its inception in the late 70s, found on the right side. We chose to accurately recreate the circuit of this classic overdrive but with the addition of some of the most common modifications the pedal has seen throughout the years of its mass production or boutique variations. A clipping toggle switch selects between symmetrical (original) or asymmetrical clipping for enhanced touch-sensitive drive characteristics while a gain toggle adds more gain and alters the low frequency response making it reminiscent of placing two of the same overdrive pedals in series. An internal switch offers additional headroom by providing 18V DC to the overdrive circuit.

Crossfire Overdrive

Utilizing JFET technology cascaded gain stages we set out to mimic the signal path and response of a high gain tube amp. Combining the best sounds of American and British style high gain amps along with a versatile 3 band passive EQ and presence control we created a distortion effect that can cover a wide range of gain from low overdrive – crunchy sounds to fully saturated gain with huge amounts of sustain. Even at high gain settings Black Magic mk2 preserves full clarity and definition and can clean up with your guitar’s volume knob. With an assignable boost footswitch you can select to boost gain, volume or both in order to stand out for your solo without the need to change settings on the fly.
